Maxima of discretely sampled random fields, with an application to ‘bubbles’

چکیده
A smooth Gaussian random field with zero mean and unit variance is sampled on a discrete lattice, and we are interested in the exceedence probability (P-value) of the maximum in a finite region. If the random field is smooth relative to the mesh size, then the P-value can be well approximated by results for the continuously sampled smooth random field (Adler, 1981; Worsley, 1995a; Taylor and Adler, 2003). If the random field is not smooth, so that adjacent lattice values are nearly independent, then the usual Bonferroni bound is very accurate. The purpose of this paper is to bridge the gap between the two, and derive a simple, accurate upper bound for mesh sizes in between. The result uses a new improved Bonferroni-type bound based on discrete local maxima (DLM). We give an application to the ‘bubbles’ technique for detecting areas of the face used to discriminate fear from happiness. Some key words: Bonferroni; Random fields; Bubbles; Euler characteristic.

Towards a new model of speculative bubbles: nonparametric test with an application to the Tunisian Stock Index
Bubbles in asset prices have fascinated researchers in finance. Identify asset bubbles, by circumstances, on the stock market has been a growing number of research theoretical and empirical. On a theoretical level, it was assumed that the price dynamics reflect irrational behavior of economic agents and, therefore, should be excluded from a deal with the truly rational economic agents Burmeiste...
متن کاملAn Incremental Method for Computing the Intersection of Discretely Sampled m-Dimensional Images with n-Dimensional Boundaries
This paper describes an algorithm for clipping of m-dimensional objects that intersect a compact n-dimensional rectangular area. The new algorithm is an extension of a method for line clipping in three dimensions. Motivated by the need for efficient algorithms for example when comparing three-dimensional (3-D) images to each other, our method allows for the incremental computation of the subset...
متن کاملTILTED EULER CHARACTERISTIC DENSITIES FOR CENTRAL LIMIT RANDOM FIELDS, WITH APPLICATION TO “BUBBLES” By N. Chamandy
Local increases in the mean of a random field are detected (conservatively) by thresholding a field of test statistics at a level u chosen to control the tail probability or p-value of its maximum. This p-value is approximated by the expected Euler characteristic (EC) of the excursion set of the test statistic field above u, denoted Eφ(Au). Under isotropy, one can use the expansion Eφ(Au) = ∑ k...
متن کاملDetecting sparse signals in random fields, with an application to brain mapping
Brain mapping data have been modeled as Gaussian random fields, and local increases in mean are detected by local maxima of a random field of test statistics derived from this data. Accurate P-values for local maxima are readily available for isotropic data based on the expected Euler characteristic of the excursion set of the test statistic random field. In this paper we give a simple method f...
متن کاملEstimators of Diffusions with Randomly Spaced Discrete Observations: a General Theory By
We provide a general method to analyze the asymptotic properties of a variety of estimators of continuous time diffusion processes when the data are not only discretely sampled in time but the time separating successive observations may possibly be random. We introduce a new operator, the generalized infinitesimal generator, to obtain Taylor expansions of the asymptotic moments of the estimator...
